Will I be able to get images directly from Project Atomic, or will they all be from Fedora, CentOS, etc.?

No, Project Atomic is the upstream for the overall concept, but the actual images will come from the Fedora and CentOS communities (or from Red Hat). The project is for coordinating work necessary to produce Atomic hosts and supporting tools, rather than to create its own, separate, distribution.

if Fedora were to send out an OpenSSL update via RPM, that RPM would need to be used to create a new rpm-street for Atomic users to update with. You could create a new tree from one or many RPM package updates. Hosts using rpm-ostree keep the package manifest, so you can still query the RPM database about the package information, but all updates are actually distributed as individual trees that may be composed of many RPM updates.
