Maybe this is an unusual question, is there any way to copy, backup, mirror or clone the container once it is created? What happens if the particular setup fails? If this is a noob question and not relevant, let me know.

Walters is right "docker commit" saves your containers present state to an image, so the state can be re-used. (Don't have enough points to upvote yet?) That sounds like your clone / mirror use.

For backup / copy, what exactly are you trying to accomplish? Traditional backup / restore? Containers should probably be as stateless and replaceable as possible. Copy to another host? You may want a local registry to push and pull committed images.
